Had the great Winston
Churchill been an observer of this match on Saturday
sponsored by PRESBAR DIECASTINGS, he might just have been
heard to utter another memorable speech. "Never on the field
of cricket, have so many been mystified by the decisions of
so few" In 35 years of cricket your correspondent has never
seen 8 lbw's in a league game. Quite bizarre on a firm pitch
with good bounce extravagant swing.
The toss was won by
Chelford who decided to bat first and quickly found the
swing of opening bowlers Hogben (4-68) & Thornhill
(4-34) a challenge. Quite frankly the boys batted without
sufficient application and despite some odd umpiring calls
found themselves in the mire at 54-5.
Once again the team were
indebted to another fine knock by in form keeper 'Fuz'
Shiells (43) who saved his side from trouble in partnership
with Johan Buys (21no). Chelford finally closing on a sub
par 126 all out on a good pitch.
To rescue the situation
Chelford needed to bowl out of their skins after tea, and
fortunately they have an attack capable of doing just that.
The best bowling unit in the league got to work on the
Wistaston batters, with opener P.Aspinall restricted to 4 in
24 overs. P.Owen (23), J.Hogben (3 sixes in 18) & J.Allwood
(17) tried their best but Chelford edged home by 7 runs.
Not a great afternoon for
the Chelford batting unit. More work required in the coming
weeks. However, a win is a win, and Chelford go second in
the table. |
